Most people will agree that accountability is a crucial ingredient for successful team and project management. Itâs also considered one of the more challenging tasks of a manager. How do you successfully hold your team members or those of other teams accountable? How do you prevent crippling attitudes such as âwait and seeâ or ânot my jobâ? How can you overcome personal barriers in acting accountably?
Accountability is a mindset, a personal commitment, and a practice â regardless the circumstances. Itâs a personal, team and organization matter about transparency in responsibilities and relationships and about preventing excuses, complaints, justifications, procrastination, and other victim behaviors.
Unfortunately, accountability tends to have a bad reputation, eliciting negative images such as punishment, micro-management, fear, and blaming practices. This webinar is based on three authorities on accountability: Miller, Bustin, and Connors et al. In his book The Question Behind the Question John Miller explains how to convert negative, ill-focused questions such as âWho dropped the ball?â into questions such as âHow can I possibly be a part of the solution?â We will cover these dynamics and questions together with leadership practices that either stifle or enable accountability. We will translate Greg Bustinâs seven pillars of accountability to your daily practice, and look at the role of feedback and candor in accountability. Lastly weâll discuss how you can implement the âSee it, Solve it, Own it, Do itâ model by Connors, Smith, and Hickman. You will identify personal tips and tools for increasing your own accountability as well as practices that increase the chance for others to act accountably.
