This year President-Elect Chris Doyle and I were able to travel to Barcelona, Spain to meet with leaders from 69 PMI chapters in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. For three days we were able to compare chapter organization and programs, exchange ideas for new events, discuss the challenge of scheduling activities in large metropolitan areas, and ask questions about PMI global operations. The purpose of these annual conferences is to have chapter leaders inspire one another through
So what are some of the things we learned? We gathered names for speakers and educators and a future Key Note speaker for PDD. From PMI Global we learned about the next phase of VRMS, the volunteer management system used by PMI chapters, and how to create presentations to distribute the information to members. We also learned about educational outreach tools to help us move forward with planning more events for University students, how to tap into the PMI thought leadership series on LinkedIn, creating better relationships with local government, expanding the guest pass program for non-chapter members, links to essential resources for chapter leaders, PMI content available on YouTube, and the importance of a 3-year chapter business plan. From Poland Chapter we learned about a fun speaker competition event in which the audience judges six speakers on a ten-minute presentation on a specific topic. Poland also shared its best practices for branch and outreach programs. From Montreal Chapter, we got some great tips on creating blogs for the website, adding relevant content, and creating a more dynamic social media presence, including live tweeting events. I’ve got three pages of notes to share with the marketing and communication committee. From Turkey Chapter we learned how to perform multi-criteria decision analysis to rank choices and mathematically make decisions based on needs, not wants. From Belgium, Indonesia and Thailand Chapters we learned how to reach out and engage students, develop University contacts, and effect the curriculum locally. From Bulgaria and Romania Chapters we learned about the impact of the global economy on the affordability of PMI membership for local project managers and how they are promoting the value of project management. From France Chapter we heard about an idea to share speakers by inviting chapter members traveling abroad to stop by the local chapter and give a presentation at an event. Many chapters were interested in developing this idea.
There are approximately 280 PMI chapters in the world, with 13 currently in formation. Our chapter is committed to building relationships with chapters across the globe and exchanging ideas to help one another grow and provide more value to members. I am very grateful for the learning experience and opportunity to network with chapter leaders from six continents. This sharing of creative ideas enables us to bring fresh programming to our chapters, create new training for our volunteers, and provides a global support network. The future growth of PMI is outside of North America, and the Minnesota Chapter is an active participant in the global community.
Terri Kimball, PMP Chapter NewsThe Career Networking Group: Project Management Career by Your DesignPresenter will lead a networking discussion which will be describing various career paths for project managers. There will be interaction by tables where participants can share experiences of where they have been, and where they are right now. The presenter will invite the audience to project some milestones, and to lay a plan on how to get closer to towards their ideal goals. In memory of Ana Alvarez-Holmberg, a local leader in project management and corporate training, PMI-MN and the Twin Cities chapter of the American Society of Training and Development (ATD-GTC) offer the Ana Alvarez-Holmberg Scholarships. PMI-MN and ATD-GTC awarded the Ana Alvarez-Holmberg Scholarship to its first recipient, Daniel Shuster, at the January, 2007 Chapter meeting. We continue to honor an individual each year. PMI-MN asked two recent scholarship recipients to tell us about their experiences, and learned that the benefits extend well-beyond the immediate financial assistance.
