Two Sides to this Coin -- Tom and Barb have worked on a number of manufacturing projects together. Tom representing the buyer (a medical device company) and Barb representing the supplier (a plastic molding company). This presentation provides a unique opportunity to see how projects are managed from two perspectives, and will delve into the issues and “Lessons Learned” around that relationship and those projects. Both speakers are past presenters on Root Cause Analysis and error prevention (predictive analysis and process analysis). The presentation will cover the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of managing manufacturing projects. Barb and Tom both have track records for successful projects ranging from minor part revisions to multimillion dollar new product launches.

Barb Flemming works by day as a Project Manager for Metro Mold and Design, a plastic molding company in the Minneapolis / St Paul metro.  Barb and her company specialize in solving problems for large companies through upfront engineering of plastic molded components.  She has been with the company for 25 years, having begun her career on the production floor, moving into Quality Engineering, and most recently transitioning to Project Management. The project management role was an outcome of over 10 years in QC, inspecting parts and performing quality studies to determine process stability. As the company developed ISO processes, Barb guided the company through Corrective / Preventive actions and developed a deep love for root cause analysis. After years of correcting problems after they happened, she jumped into project management, and since 2010 has used that role to focus on issue prevention.

Tom Fenton has more than 40 years of manufacturing experience, with over 20 in management roles. Currently an Operations Engineer and Project Manager for MEDIVATORS, a medical device firm in Plymouth, Tom recently started Pearl Lake Resources, a consulting company. Tom’s experience covers several interesting perspectives over the years: Machinist, Mold Maker, Engineer, Inventor, Toolroom Manager and Project Manager. Much of that experience devoted to creating plastic injection components and medical devices. Tom holds an MS in Project Management, is a PMI certified PMP, a Journeyman Moldmaker, and has multiple medical device patents to his name.
