Minnesota Chapter of the Project Management Institute
Building Professionalism in Project Management
November 2016 | Volume 18, Issue 11
Message from the Chapter President
The Chapter is wrapping up events for 2016 with a few important activities. We are hosting the last dinner meeting and seminar of 2016 the week after Thanksgiving, and a special ProjectTalks with Watermark Learning on December 15.
In the spirit of giving thanks, I would like to say thank you to every member for your continued support of our chapter and interest in project management. We continue to be one of the largest and most innovative chapters in the world because of the inspiration, participation and feedback from our members. Next I would like to thank the dozens of volunteers who make everything possible. From soliciting speakers, coordinating classes, breakfast and dinner meetings, webinars and special events, to training volunteers, reaching out to students of all ages, making sure our website functions and bringing our services to every corner of Minnesota and North Dakota, our volunteers perform more duties than I can list. It all adds up to more than 8000 hours each year. I ask all of you to consider nominating outstanding chapter volunteers for recognition. In January of each year we celebrate our outstanding volunteers from the previous year. Three awards are based on nominations from members: Volunteer of the Year, Team of the Year, and Chapter Colleague. Let someone know that they made a difference in your experience and nominate them for an award.
Our members elected four new representatives to the Board of Directors, and we recently completed a training and transition activity with them. You know how important formal onboarding activities are at a place of employment, and we agree. We are currently in the process of filling open committee positions as current volunteers transition into new roles. Interested in volunteering for 2017? Contact chairvolunteers@pmi-mn.org, or visit the Join Us tab on our web site.
Alex Wincell and I are working on defining a career pathing and succession process for Chapter volunteers, which we will roll out later this month. Volunteering with the Chapter is a great way to gain leadership skills that you may not have the opportunity to explore in your current job. All Chapter volunteers are able to move through a variety of functional areas, and career pathing helps them define a progression of responsibilities to gain core competencies in all areas of chapter operation. Succession planning aids the chapter in identifying and preparing volunteers for leadership positions, eventually leading to the Board of Directors.

November Career Networking
On Monday, October 17, 2016, Julie Soderland shared with the audience tools and techniques on how to create impressive, impactful, and authentic image by consciously revealing one's core values, passions, and achievements.
Julie recommended using our words, behavior and presentation to expand and enhance our day-to-day behavior and relationships with teams and organizations. By the end of the session, the group gave examples of how they will apply the knowledge to their professional lives (from interviewing and networking to leading teams and making better decisions).
On November 28, we are excited to have Judy Richardson-Mahre and Phil Almeroth from LogiSolve (5-6 pm at Crown Plaza in Plymouth) to talk about being Ready For Your Next Opportunity!
Laura Wakefiled has been an enviable Program Manager for our Breakfast Meetings in St. Paul for approximately 7 years. That, in itself, is a worthy achievement. However, Laura has brought professionalism to the role that has been appreciated by the speakers and those attending her events. She has not only mastered the tasks of her role but she looks for the improvements and has bought in highly engaging speakers. Thank you Laura for providing a great sense of comfort and the confidence in knowing you so handily take care of all the needs to bring these events to life. This thank you is not only for a single month but many months of superior volunteering for our chapter. PMI-MN would like to thank Laura for her time and dedication. Congratulations Laura!
