We take a look at the needs of our members, the programs we want to continue or launch, and the support required. The next two years promise to be innovative and exciting, as the we plan for a student conference in February, meet-ups and expanded career programming in April and May, quarterly networking sessions in downtown Minneapolis, a summer family event, and more informal activities. As always, we are committed to providing value to our members-but what does that mean? It means providing a variety of ways for members to become involved, to learn, to attend networking events, to feel that they are part of something worthwhile. One way to get more value from you PMI membership is to volunteer. Volunteering has benefits not just for the chapter, but for individual growth. It’s not just about us, it’s about YOU. Here are a few reasons why you should consider volunteering:
The bottom line is this; volunteering helps you work on your career path by gaining experience and expanding your network. I have been a volunteer with PMI since 2001, and have had the privilege to work with dozens of wonderful people who have made me feel welcome and opened my eyes to all the nuances of project management. I have been an active participant in the growth of the chapter as it celebrated milestones such as the 20th anniversary, 2000 members, then 3000 members and our 30th anniversary. You can be part of future growth and change. Check out current volunteer opportunities at every breakfast and dinner meeting, or visit the PMI VRMS site at https://vrms.pmi.org/ The Minnesota Chapter is currently looking for a few good volunteers for 2017, will you please be one of them? Chapter NewsPMI Minnesota's Professional Development Days is the chapter's largest event of the year. This year we had over 40 vendors representing colleges and universities, staffing agencies, project management resources and services. We had 512 attendees for the education classes and over 600 for Symposium Day. A majority of participants are from Minnesota, however we had some from Wisconsin, Illinois, and North Dakota. The one and two day classes include PM technical skills and soft skills that every one can use. This year the classes and tracks were distributed among the three skill sets of the PMI Talent Triangle - Technical, Leadership, and Strategic & Business Management. Recertification through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCRS) requires balancing education requirements and experience to achieve the required number of Professional Development Units (PDU's). We provide that balance for the Education portion of the recertification. 2017 Board Election NewsElections are complete, your votes have been cast and counted, the Board has ratified the results, and the 2017 slate is excited to be "on Board”! The official results will be announced at the Dinner meeting October 17th. Sponsors & Partners Appreciation LunchIf your organization has considered sponsoring a PMI-MN event or partnering with PMI-MN, you may want to consider our upcoming Sponsor and Partner Appreciation Luncheon to learn about the opportunities available in 2017. Academic Scholarship Awarded to Philip NushannPMI-MN sponsors the Robert Yourzak Scholarship which is administered by the PMI Education Foundation. It is open to both undergraduates and graduates who are studying Project Management or a related field.
This year we are proud to announce that the Philip Nushan of St. Paul has been awarded the scholarship. Philip is studying at St. Mary’s University and is graduate student in Educational Leadership and Administration. After completing his studies at St. Mary’s Philip plans to return to Liberia and continue serving his people, but this time from a broader perspective and an advanced leadership standpoint. He will also spend quality time teaching because of his firm belief that the classroom provides unique opportunities for exceptional interactions that lead to remarkable and personal transformation.
Ana Alvarez-Holmberg ScholarshipThe Ana Alvarez-Holmberg Scholarship winner has been selected. The scholarship is co-sponsored by PMI-MN and the Greater Twin Cities chapter of ATD (Association for Talent Development). The two organizations split the award ceremony, alternating year to year. This year the ATD chapter (http://www.atd-gtc.org) will announce the winner and award the scholarship at its November 28th dinner meeting.
